A text description of a fence is not enough — the committee needs to see the height, color, and style. Photos, renderings or drawings let the committee make a decision without asking you to resubmit.
Not specifying materials and finishes
A "brown fence" and a "composite brown fence" are different things. Be specific about material, color and finish so the committee knows exactly what is being proposed.
Expecting immediate approval
Architectural review is not instant. Most HOAs review monthly or quarterly. If your project is time-sensitive, ask the board about the timeline before you submit.

Check your covenants, conditions and restrictions (CC&Rs). Typically it is exterior changes: roofs, siding, fences, decks, paint colors, landscaping. Interior changes usually do not need approval unless they are visible from outside.
How long does architectural review take?
That depends on your HOA. Some review monthly, others quarterly. Check your CC&Rs or ask the board when to expect a decision. Approved requests move forward; denied ones get specific feedback so you can revise.
