Free-text shift entry instead of a dropdown
A text field for shift produces "morning", "mornings", "early" and other inconsistent answers you would have to reconcile by hand. Use a dropdown with exact shift times instead.
Not sending a confirmation email after sign-up
A volunteer who signs up without confirmation does not know when or where to show up — always follow up with shift time and location.
Collecting too much detail for a low-barrier sign-up
Keep the form to name, contact and shift. Asking for an essay on motivation turns a two-minute sign-up into an application.

Can volunteers sign up for more than one shift?
Yes, unless you prevent it — the form itself does not stop a duplicate submission. If you want one shift per person, say so in the intro and check the CSV for duplicates.
How do I confirm shift assignments after sign-up?
Export sign-ups to CSV and send each volunteer a confirmation email with their shift, location and what to bring — that email also serves as your record they received the details.
What if a volunteer does not show up?
The form is the sign-up only; managing no-shows is up to you. Many organisers send a reminder the day before or the morning of the shift to confirm attendance.
